Elective C-sections?
In Poland, more and more women are giving birth via Caesarean section. Statistics show that this number is dangerously approaching 50 percent of all births in the country, while the World Health Organisation recommends that this rate should hover around 10 percent. More below!
This is worrying. A C-section is a major operation carrying many risks for both mother and child. After the procedure, women can experience serious complications. For the child, doctors particularly highlight weakened immunity. The current situation suggests that Polish women are afraid of childbirth. This is primarily due to the standard of perinatal care and the availability of pain relief. The latter should always be available on demand, but the shortage of anaesthetists means women are often denied it.
