Stomach Viruses in Dogs – A Threat That Cannot Be Ignored

Like all animals, dogs are susceptible to various types of viruses. A significant proportion of diseases caused by viral infections affect the digestive system. This article discusses the most common and dangerous diseases of this kind, which dog owners should undoubtedly pay particular attention to.

Dangerous Viruses

Dogs frequently suffer from viral intestinal infections, including parvovirus, coronavirus, and rotavirus infections. Their symptoms include:

  • Vomiting
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Significant decrease in energy levels

Dogs affected by these infections can deteriorate rapidly, becoming severely weakened in a short period of time. This sudden decline can lead to death within just a few days. These diseases are particularly dangerous because they often affect puppies, which may not always display noticeable symptoms. This highlights the importance of vaccination, something every dog owner should be fully aware of!

A similar disease is leptospirosis, also known as Stuttgart disease or Weil's disease, which dogs typically contract by consuming contaminated food. Its initial symptoms include:

  • Redness of the conjunctiva
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Loss of appetite

Later symptoms include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea that changes from yellow to bloody
  • Urine that initially becomes dark yellow and later turns brown

Since the disease causes dehydration, intensive fluid replacement is essential during treatment. Antibiotics can help eliminate the infection.

Another extremely dangerous disease, although relatively rare in our country, is Rubarth's disease, also known as infectious canine hepatitis. It affects both young and older dogs that have not been vaccinated. The disease attacks the liver and kidneys, potentially causing permanent damage and impairing their function.

Protect Your Dog Against Viruses

There are two main ways to protect dogs against the diseases described above:

  • Early vaccination: Dogs should be vaccinated from an early age to protect them against dangerous infections.
  • Supporting the immune system: Maintaining a healthy balance of intestinal microflora is essential, as it enables dogs to absorb the nutrients necessary for building a strong immune system. To achieve this, dogs should receive an adequate supply of beneficial bacteria, which can be found, for example, in dietary supplements and beef tripe.

Viruses that attack a dog's digestive system are extremely dangerous and can sometimes even lead to death. Moreover, many of these infections may develop without noticeable symptoms, making it easy to miss the crucial moment when treatment is needed. In such cases, only a prompt response can help prevent fatal consequences.

This clearly demonstrates just how important it is to vaccinate dogs and take proper care of their immune systems.
